I sit in silent meditation beneath an ornate Pine beside a mountain stream. I am here to reflect on the twelve zodiac and five elements to determine which holds sway. A rat crawls across my sleeve but feels too manipulative. In a nearby field a pig meanders -- too lackadsaisical. Joining it is the dog with lack of concern. Across the river I see the sheep but I'm not that lucky. It grazes with the ox -- too steadfast. Upon the ox's back is the monkey being a little too playful. In my mind I see the dragon, powerful and enigmatic, but too noble I'm afriad. It has stopped to make conversation with the faithful horse... I lack this faith. Both are being serenaded by the much too flamboyant rooster. Lastly, there is a wild roar. Into purview comes the tiger. It races with frenetic energy after something but cannot quite retain focus long enough to rein in its wild energy. The rabbit, no fool, will not leave this to chance and makes the perfect escape. The rabbit then narrowly avoids the fangs of a mysterious snake, eventually returning to its earthen burrow. After a while, my eyes slowly open. As they do, I notice something in my lap. It is the rabbit fast asleep. It awakens and in the most beautiful of gestures, bequeathes to me a gift of sodden earth before retreating. ...Departed | |
