Today marks the day that Survivalist Quotah has taken me on one of the most invaluable and informative trips to date. We ventured into the Islets, to the west fo the Buyan Kingdom, but to merely use the word 'ventured' would be a gross understatement - she opened my eyes to the beauty of the Islets. At the same time, on our journey, she taught me many important skills - skills that will no doubt last a lifetime. As we begun, I learned about the bridges sprinkled throughout the Islets, about how they have been there for a long time, and about how they are typically used without a second thought. This trip taught me to respect these bridges and to exercise caution and careful observation when traversing, especially with heavy loads. Making our way past one of the bridges, we came to a smaller stretch of land, caught between our previous bridge and another. Here is where I learned about the wonderful arts of Trapping, Foraging, and Security. I learned of the various sources that can be used for sustenance should one be stranded, and how to trap them. Additionally, I learned that some creatures can be used for more than just satiating hunger, but also for security, such as is the case with Deer Antlers, for example. Once we passed this strectch of land, crossing the second brdige, we happened upon a pit filled with water. Here is where I found out that not all water is safe to drink, especially still water such as the case with the pit of water before us. Although this water was not safe straight from the pit, I learned that there are multiple ways to cleanse this water, making it safe to drink. Some of these ways are using a cloth the filter the water, using a fire to boil the water, or filling a bottle with the water and leaving it in the Sun for 4-6 hours. Making our way past the pit of water, we stopped at area full of trees. Here I learned that should one need a weapon, these trees could be a way to craft some. The bark from the trees could be used to craft blades and spears, but also bows and arrows! And this is where Quotah taught me about Archery. In addition to weapon crafting, and using said weapons, I also learned the art of Camouflage using these trees, that sometimes its better to blend in instead of trying not to be seen. After making our way through the trees, Camouflaging ourselves from the wildlife, she taught me about Cartography. I learned how important mapping an area is but also how creating a map others can actually read is as equally important. She taught me the effectiveness of building a map and constructing a meaningful legend so that others find the most utility out of the map. Of all the skills, I would have to say that I found Cartography to be my favorite. I have been using maps for a long time and find them immensely useful, but I thought it was uniquely fun learning about how to craft them and the work that goes into ensuring its useful and helpful to others. -Sasume | |
