Life is chaotic enough as it is. In this chaos, the outside world will find stability on its own. But inside ourselves is a much greater torrent of emotions and thoughts. Why must we keep ourselves balanced? How do we even do that? Let me start with what happens if your find your inner self unbalanced. How you are feeling at any particular moment will imprint itself on any memory you have of something you experience at that point in time. Over a period of time, this might begin to associate certain things with certain feelings, which may not even be appropriate. For example, if someone swats the ice cream out of your hand, you're probably going to be upset for the rest of the day. Later, someone asks you to help in a clan event. You might still be upset about the ice cream, and relate sadness to clan events. In the end, you become biased towards clan events, thinking they are sad affairs. On the opposite of the spectrum, what if the person who knocked over your ice cream did it accidently and felt bad about it, so they buy you two to replace it. You're probably pretty excited (yay, two ice creams). And later you go to a carnage, still pretty happy. The end result is that you associate killing with joy. Tsk tsk, you murderer, you. In the end, keeping a neutral attitude towards things helps you maintain a clear view about what is true and what isn't. I maintain the balance in my inner self quite easily. It's important to view things from an "outside" perspective. Do not think of the events that occur around you as being directly related to you. This means that there are other factors in life that cause certain things to happen that you are not aware of. When something affects me greatly, I usually meditate on it afterwards to try to derive a clearer perspective on it. Zuo Ci | |
