During my travels as a Drisac Bard, I have learned and enjoyed many lessons and events that had happened to me.
I had taken off one morning, wishing to travel a bit before settling down. I found myself needing sustenance, not having brought nearly enough with me. I'm training to become a bard, I thought to myself, I may as well act like one. Confident in my abilities, the next town I happened upon would enjoy my attempted performance. I set up in the common grounds and standing in the center of the large open area, I sang. I belted out songs I had heard over the years from other entertainers and from bars I frequented, cleaned up the words from the ones I remembered from the taverns.
There was no one standing in the commons, although several were walking about going where ever they were destined to go, filling jugs from the communal water well, set off to the north of the commons. Soon, however, people were stopping and coming nearer to where I was singing. I soon had quite the audience, young, old, babes and toddlers. With each song I sang, the people reacted accordingly. A sad song brought tears, sad faces, a jovial song brought smiles and openness. A cleaned up tavern ditty brought laughter and singing from the audience.
A very important looking man came through the crowd and stood before me. He had in his hand a mug of ale and offered it to me. "We are a poor people, good muse, I fear we have no coin to pay you for your performance." Having finished my song, I smiled his way. I don't ask for coin of gold or silver. My payment comes from the faces and voices of the people around me. I want to bring joy and peace however I can. I took a long drink of the ale, weak but tasty.
A young girl, around 8 years old, approached me shyly and handed me a warm loaf of bread, wrapped in a swath of cloth. A young man, nearly an adult gave me a large wedge of cheese, another gave me more ale, I received some meat, I think it was beef, I'm not sure, but it was tasty.
I sat on the grass, laid out the fabric with the bread. I used my dagger to slice off some of the cheese and some of the beef. I sliced off a bit of bread and placed the items before me on it. My mug of ale was refilled and I ate my banquet, offering grunts of thanks and sighs of contentment.
The crowd, having been entertained and satisfied the payment they offered was more than enough, wondered off, going about their daily lives a little happier for my efforts. I could get used to this, I thought to myself as I bit into my meal again. Smiling around the crumbs on my lips, I was happy.
