Just A Seed

It was just a seed, an acorn really. It had loosened itself from it's home branch and now dropped, bouncing from branch to lower branch. Until, finally, it landed on a pile of decomposing leaves at the trunk of it's mother tree.
It had lain there for awhile, content in it's nest of soft folage, but it wouldn't last. A rustling sounded and it came closer. Compared to the acorn, this red, furry creature was huge, with it's beady black eyes, it's long front teeth and a bushy, twitchy tail. It picked up the nut, putting it in it's mouth and took off, looking for the perfect place to hide this bounty until winter.
It stopped aways off and began digging, clearing the leaves to reach the rich, brown earth under them. The creature dropped the acorn and pushed the dirt and leaves over it and then scampered away.
The acorn laid there, feeling the changes happening above it. It felt the chill of winter snow blanketing it and heard the scrabbling of little feet. The darkness was complete, but in that darkness a change was happening. The seed shell split open and a tiny green foot emerged. That foot forced it's way deeper into the warming, moist soil, as another appendage came forth from the crack. This limb moved up, pushing it's way to the light. It burst through the ground cover and was greeted by a bright, warm ray of sunshine. It's very own ray, the small newly formed oak tree spread it's two tiny leaves to catch all the sunlight it could. Now it would grow into a mighty oak tree. Taking it's place among the elders of it's race. It will watch and listen and, in it's growth rings, record all that happens around it.
