The morning dew clung to the clumps of grass as I set out from Buya. I had my staff in hand, pack on my back, and the wilderness pulling me forward. I knew, from my experiences with my lost love Nohjis, that a scouting trip was never just about eyes and ears - it was about the belly, too! No sense in returning empty-handed when the wilderness offered so much more than just adventure.

I walked with light steps as my attention was split between the trail ahead and the overgrown plants at my feed. Along a damp hollow, I spotted a cluster of dandelions - its sharp leaves promising a bitter flavor but good sustenance. I knelt and picked a few of the leaves. I bundled it with a bit of twine I always carry with me.

Further down the trail, I came across some prints I did not expect to find. They were broad, claws, and pressed deep into the moist ground. The beast had come through here not too long ago. I crouched and studied the prints in more detail - steady and firm. There was no rush in them. I veered off of the path when I noticed a rich purple orb floating in the bushes...

Much to my delight, the bush was covered in deep purple berries! I recognized these - they were blackberries! I gathered carefully, avoiding the thorns, and tucked them into a small pouch that I hung from my pack. Food for now, or perhaps a treat for the beast.

I knew I would need a bit of water soon. I continued to follow the prints - as I knew that all beasts also seek water. It was not long before I came upon a bubbling spring. Kneeling on the side of it, I filled my wolf pelt skins, then scanned the water. I noticed a few large apple snails, which I knew I could eat, so I gathered them up and put them into a steamer box I brought with. They are not pleasant to look at but they roast up nicely on a small fire.

Still following the tracks, I kept my eye's focused. I noticed a few mushrooms on a fallen log. I did not bother approaching them - I recognize the red caps with white spots. I wanted to make it out of the woods tonight... not die in them.

I knew I was getting closer to the beast, as I noticed some fresh claw marks on a nearby ginko tree. I noted it in my mind. This was no beast on a stroll - it was marking territory! I could smell it. There were a few wild onions near the ginko tree so I gathered a few. I took a deep smell - they were safe from the marking! In to my pack they want.

By the time the sun was dipping below the horizon, my pack was pretty full with dandelions, some berries, snails, and onions! I knew the beast was near... and it was only a matter of time until we met.
