The gauntlet really is a gauntlet, it's tough at any point.
There are some tricks with varying degrees of cheatiness -

First off, which is key, don't be afraid to kill the orange and cyan things. These don't have one hitpoint like the others, but aren't too strong. As long as you don't hesitate, you should have time to clear a blocker or two before you get truly stuck.

I don't know exactly what the breakpoints for the gauntlet strength tiers are - but if you're on the verge of a damage upgrade, take it and see if the cyans and oranges are any easier.

Try out using right-click-to-move rather than arrowkeys - as many foxhunters can tell you the slightly different behaviour while turning can be enough to matter when dashing through.

Bring a mount item rather than just going in with a horse, someone will happily lend you one. Then, if you have to dismount to swing, you can safely remount just before entering the next room.

The creatures are slightly slow to react to your presence - try to start every room by charging straight ahead and you'll often make a lot of ground before they start to clump.

If all else fails, the creatures are forgivingly prone to wandering randomly when nobody is around. This is pretty unusual behaviour, but it means if you get seriously trapped, you can disconnect for ~half an hour and come back to find the room effectively reset.

And yes, of course, most of these tricks were completely unavailable to the warriors of old. It just really is a hard time!

(Note, unreg warriors can *do* the gauntlet and have it *count* as complete as far as I am aware, but they can't *hold* the Nagnang shield, nor any other shield, so.)
